Where is Eureka Springs?

Eureka Springs is a city in Carroll County, Arkansas, United States. It is located in the Ozarks Mountians of Northwest Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 2,073. The entire city is on the National Register of Historic Places as the Eureka Springs Historic District. Eureka Springs has been selected as one of America's Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Eureka Springs was originally called "The Magic City" and later the "Stairstep Town" because of its mountainous terrain and the winding, up-and-down paths of its streets and walkways. It is a tourist destination for its unique character as a Victorian resort village. The city has steep winding streets filled with Victorian-style cottages and manors. The historic commercial downtown of the city has an extensive streetscape of well-preserved Victorian buildings. The buildings are primarily constructed of local stone, built along streets that curve around the hills and rise and fall with the topography in a five-mile long loop. Some buildings have street-level entrances on more than one floor. The streets wind around the town, and no two intersect at a 90-degree angle; there are no traffic lights.

When and where will the Plein Air competition be held?

Invitational Artists will paint around picturesque Eureka Springs, AR

What is Plein Air?

Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” Eureka Springs has always been an art destination in Arkansas and is a beautiful place to “open air” or “Plein Air” paint. In 2004, founder Jody Stephenson started the Plein Air Painters of Eureka Springs and we began to regularly see artists painting in the open. Artists are always looking for beautiful and distinctive scenes to paint, and this year’s 2019 Invitational event is offering some of the finest artists in Arkansas and United States, the opportunity to paint the beauty and uniqueness of Eureka Springs. The Plein Air of Eureka Spring (PAOFES) became a non-profit organization in 2019, with a mission to bring quality arts, artists and cultural events to beautiful, historic, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
